What Turnitin similarity score is acceptable?+
There is no single safe number. Turnitin says its similarity score is not a verdict on plagiarism: it is the share of your text that matches other sources, and your professor decides whether each match matters. Quotes and references you have cited properly can raise the score without being a problem, so look at what matched, not just the percentage.
Why is my score different from my university's?+
Universities set Turnitin up in different ways. Some leave out quoted text, the reference list or very short matches, and some also compare work with their own past submissions. Those settings move the percentage a little, so small differences are normal. Focus on the matched sections the report lists.
Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT?+
Turnitin's AI writing report estimates how much of a document was likely written by AI tools such as ChatGPT, and it can also flag AI text that has been reworded by a paraphrasing tool. The result is a likelihood, not proof, and scores under 20% appear as an asterisk instead of a number to cut false positives.
How long can my document be for the AI check?+
Turnitin's AI writing check works on 300 to 30,000 words of prose, in English, Spanish or Japanese. A longer document, such as a full thesis, still gets the complete similarity report, just without the AI result. To get an AI result for all of it, check it in parts of up to 30,000 words.
Will Turnitin store my work in its database?+
No. Your file is not added to the student repository, so it will not match against itself when you submit. It is deleted after your report.
